It’s time for the super awkward part of running for government… Raising money! The pandemic has made it so it isn’t safe to canvass apartment buildings in person so we have plans to do extra mailings to them letting them know where they can vote. But that’s not cheap!
If you weren’t aware Canada has a fairly generous tax credit for federal campaigns, as described in the table below. These credits are non-refundable, which means they only do something if you actually would pay federal income tax this year. If you would pay $300 in taxes you could instead give $400 to a federal election campaign. The net result is you give $100 and the CRA gives $300 to the campaign. I will note that I am not an accountant, but I do have a Bachelor of Mathematics and this math checks out. 😉
